New Zealand Import Regulation of Vehicle
Customs requirements to import a vehicle :
1. Vehicle ShippingClients must carry with them the following documents:

  • Purchase receipt showing total price paid and date of purchase.
  • Statement to Planet Move Management Limited showing ocean freight at cost (not full depot to depot service and insurance premium.
  • Proof of the date vehicle handed in for shipping and the odometer reading, ie condition report.
  • Proof of ownership or title to vehicle.
  Vehicles from Australia   Registration documents
  Vehicles from UK   Registration documents or Certificate of permanent Export
  Vehicles from USA/Canada   A Certificate of Title
2. For a first time immigrant with Residence Visa/Permit, having owned and used the vehicle for at least one year prior to shipment - no tax will apply.
3. For a returning New Zealander or if the vehicle is owned for less than one year, tax will be required, calculated as follows:

  • Purchase price, less depreciation, plus freight and insurance. GST @ 12.5% of the total.
  • Vehicles are duty free with the exception of motor homes.
Approximate Depreciation Scale on Imported Vehicles
For vehicles owned and used for that period, before handing in for shipment.
  Less than 90 days   0%
  3 months less than 4 months   13%
  4 months less than 6 months   20%
  6 months less than 9 months   27.5%
  9 months less than 12 months   35%
  1 year less than 2 years   50%
  2 years less than 3 years   60%
  3 years less than 4 years   70%
  4 years or more   75%
Vehicle Cleaned Prior to Export
Vehicles must be cleaned prior to export. “All parts of the vehicle must be free of contamination including the chasses, under carriage, wheels, tyres, suspension, drive shaft, exhaust, baggage compartment, spare wheel well, engine compartment, including radiator grill and air intake vents and interior of vehicle”.
Approximate Additional Expenses of Imported Vehicle
For vehicles owned and used for that period, before handing in for shipment.
  Statement of Compliance   NZ$500.00
  Quarantine inspection fee   NZ$265.00
Steam cleaning and re-inspection vacuum (if required)   NZ$400.00
  Compliance - Certificate/Warrant of Fitness   NZ$500.00
  Registration for 12 months NZ$350-$450.00 (Depending of engine CC rating)
Compliance Documents of Vehicle
  1. This document must be obtained from the manufacturers New Zealand agent for that make of vehicle.
    Please e-mail Planet full details of vehicle to enable us to confirm manufacturers New Zealand agent. Alternatively go directly to website: www.ltsa.govt.nz/importing/mia-list.html .
  2. It is the task of that agent to obtain from the overseas manufacturer the specifications on the vehicle being imported and then given a written report confirming that the vehicle complies with New Zealand manufacturing standards. This process can taken several weeks and needs to be started as soon as the owner arrives in New Zealand or prior.
  3. Exceptions - Australian registered; and vehicles manufactured and first registered before 1991.

Where the import status of a motor vehicle is difficult to determine, you may need to contact the manufacturer’s representative in New Zealand for confirmation that the vehicle is suitable for importation.
